The WiMax Definition
WiMax is the network industry term for a standard form of wireless broadband networking. WiMax is designed to support long-distance wireless connectivity to the Internet in areas not serviced by cable modem or DSL.

WiMax is the trade name for a family of new technologies related to the IEEE 802.16 wireless standards.

WiMax has the potential for very long range (5 - 30 miles) and high speeds.

The initial version, based on 802.16a, is designed for fixed (non-mobile) applications only, such as a wireless replacement for home DSL or cable modem service.

Newer versions, such as 802.16e, add support for mobility, potentially making WiMax a competitor for certain 3G or 4G cell-phone technologies.

WiMax uses OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing), an increasingly common type of digital wireless technology that is also used in some digital radio and television standards.

WiMax operates at higher frequencies than mobile phone networks. WiMax technology can operate in the 2.5 or 3.5 GHz licensed bands, or in the 5.8 GHz unlicensed band.

Unlike earlier broadband wireless access (BWA) iterations WiMax is highly standardized which should reduce costs. However, since Chipsets are custom-built for each broadband wireless access manufacturer, this adds time and cost to the process of bringing a product to market, and this won't be changed by WiMax.
